A delegation from the United States Congress has held talks with Nigeria’s National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, in Abuja as part of a wider diplomatic effort to examine fresh allegations claiming there is a Christian genocide taking place in the country.

Ribadu confirmed the meeting in a post on his X account on Sunday. He explained that the lawmakers are in Nigeria on a fact-finding mission, following earlier conversations between both sides in Washington, DC, where shared security concerns were discussed.

High-Level Consultations in Abuja

According to Ribadu, the US Ambassador to Nigeria, Richard Mills, joined the meeting, which he said reflected the importance both countries attach to ongoing security consultations.

He noted that the discussions centred on improving counter-terrorism cooperation, bolstering regional stability, and strengthening the wider security partnership between Abuja and Washington.

Ribadu added that he is confident the talks will “deepen trust, collaboration, and the shared commitment to peace and security.”

Rising Tensions After US Redesignation

The visit comes at a delicate time in Nigeria–US relations. According to reports in American media, former US President Donald Trump recently restored Nigeria’s designation as a Country of Particular Concern, citing alleged violations of religious freedom. Critics in Nigeria and abroad argue that such allegations have been framed in ways that amount to claims of a Christian genocide.

The redesignation has heightened diplomatic tension, especially as some voices in Washington have suggested punitive options, including military intervention, if the situation deteriorates.

Nigeria Rejects Allegations

The Federal Government has repeatedly dismissed accusations of systematic persecution of Christians. Officials maintain that the country’s security crises, including terrorism and communal violence, cut across religious lines and affect both Muslims and Christians.

Security analysts note that Nigeria’s outreach to international partners has increased in recent months as the government seeks to counter negative narratives and attract broader support in addressing insurgency and banditry.

Earlier Talks at the Pentagon

Ribadu had earlier met with US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth at the Pentagon, where both sides explored areas of cooperation to confront Nigeria’s worsening insecurity. The meeting in Abuja is seen as a continuation of those discussions.

Conclusion

As global scrutiny intensifies, Nigeria and the United States appear to be deepening diplomatic engagement to clarify concerns, rebuild confidence and explore joint strategies to strengthen national and regional security.
