A major investigation is underway in western Germany after thieves carried out a highly organised break-in at a Sparkasse savings bank, making off with an estimated €30 million in cash and valuables.

According to German police, the robbery targeted a Sparkasse branch on Nienhofstrasse in the Buer district of Gelsenkirchen. Investigators said the suspects used a large industrial drill to penetrate an underground vault before forcing open more than 3,000 safe deposit boxes. The boxes reportedly contained money, gold and jewellery belonging to customers.

A police spokesperson described the operation as extremely professional, noting that the methods used suggested careful planning and technical expertise. The scale and precision of the break-in have drawn comparisons to scenes more commonly associated with crime films than real-life bank robberies.

Alarm Triggered During Quiet Holiday Period

The crime came to light in the early hours of Monday after a fire alarm was activated inside the bank. Officers believe the suspects exploited the quiet Christmas period to gain access to the building without attracting immediate attention.

According to police findings, the thieves are suspected to have entered the premises and later escaped through an adjacent parking garage. Witnesses told investigators they saw several men carrying large bags along the garage staircase overnight from Saturday into Sunday.

Meanwhile, security camera footage reviewed by police reportedly shows a black Audi RS 6 leaving the garage early on Monday morning. Authorities believe the vehicle may have been used as a getaway car.

Thousands of Customers Affected

Sparkasse confirmed that about 95 percent of the branch’s safe deposit boxes were forced open during the raid. In a statement, the bank warned customers that the likelihood of being affected was very high.

The bank has since set up a dedicated hotline to assist customers and provide guidance on next steps. According to Sparkasse, the contents of each safe deposit box are insured up to €10,300. Customers have also been advised to check whether additional losses may be covered under their home insurance policies.

Investigation Continues, No Arrests Yet

As of the latest update, no arrests have been made and the suspects remain at large. The affected branch remains closed while forensic teams continue their work at the scene.

Security experts cited by German media have noted that the use of heavy drilling equipment points to an experienced group with knowledge of bank infrastructure and alarm systems. Such crimes, they say, are rare but often take months of preparation.

Police have urged anyone with information related to the suspects or the vehicle seen in the area to come forward as the investigation continues.
