A Christian cleric in Plateau State, Rev. Ezekiel Dachomo, has raised alarm over what he described as credible threats to his life, alleging that terrorists have placed a bounty on him following his public comments on the killings of Christians in parts of the country.
Speaking in a recent interview with journalist Lucky Udu, Dachomo said information from a trusted source indicated that armed groups had agreed to reward anyone who succeeds in killing him. According to him, the threat is directly linked to his outspoken criticism of what he has repeatedly described as targeted attacks on Christian communities.
According to Dachomo, the warning came through an informant who alerted him that the plan had already been concluded. He said the information suggested that those behind the plot were angered by his consistent public statements condemning the violence and calling attention to the plight of victims.
“They have placed a bounty on my head,” the cleric said during the interview. “I was told that whoever kills me will be rewarded.”
Despite the alleged threat, Dachomo said he has not altered his daily routine or sought security protection.
The cleric insisted that he is not intimidated by the reports, adding that he continues to move freely without escorts. He claimed that he often passes through predominantly Muslim areas and is recognised by residents, some of whom, he said, openly point him out.
According to him, fear will only embolden those who rely on intimidation to silence dissenting voices.
Beyond the personal risk, Dachomo also alleged that his family has suffered repercussions because of his public stance. He claimed that his children have been unfairly treated during university admission processes, particularly in northern institutions.
“If my children apply for admission and they see the name Ezekiel Dachomo, it is removed,” he said, alleging discrimination tied to his identity and views.
Security analysts have repeatedly warned that threats against religious leaders, journalists and activists often signal wider dangers to freedom of expression and public discourse. While Dachomo’s claims have not been independently verified, similar allegations by clerics and community leaders in conflict-prone areas have heightened calls for improved intelligence gathering and protection for vulnerable voices.
As of the time of the interview, no official response had been issued by security agencies regarding the alleged threat. However, Dachomo maintained that he would continue speaking out, insisting that silence would only worsen the situation.
