Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has issued a strong warning over what he described as ongoing attacks against Christians in Nigeria, saying such violence must be brought to an end immediately.
The remarks come amid sustained international debate over claims that Christians are being targeted and killed in parts of Nigeria, particularly in the Middle Belt. According to reports, the allegations have drawn reactions from political leaders, religious groups, and human rights advocates across the globe.
According to DAILY POST, the issue of alleged persecution of Christians in Nigeria has generated intense discussion in recent months. Some lawmakers in the United States, with the backing of former President Donald Trump, have accused armed groups of targeting Christians solely because of their faith.
Despite repeated denials by Nigerian government officials, Trump went on to designate Nigeria as a Country of Particular Concern, or CPC, citing alleged violations of religious freedom. He also warned that stronger actions, including military measures, could be considered if the killings were not addressed.
Meanwhile, a United States congressional delegation recently visited Nigeria to investigate reports of attacks on Christian communities. According to officials familiar with the visit, the delegation focused largely on states in the Middle Belt, where communal violence and insurgent activity have remained persistent. As of now, Trump has not announced any concrete steps following the lawmakers’ findings.
Israel weighed in on the controversy on Wednesday, with Netanyahu addressing the issue during his Christmas message. Speaking from Jerusalem, the Israeli leader said attacks on people because of their religion are unacceptable under any circumstances.
In his message, Netanyahu extended greetings to Christians around the world and highlighted Israel’s record on religious freedom. He noted that Israel remains, in his words, the only country in the Middle East where the Christian population continues to grow and practise its faith freely.
“From Jerusalem, I send warm greetings to our Christian friends around the world. I wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,” Netanyahu said. “From here, the Holy Land,
Israel is the only country in the Middle East where the Christian community is thriving.”
He added that Christians in Israel enjoy full rights, freedom of worship, and the ability to openly celebrate their traditions without fear. According to him, Christian pilgrims are welcomed and protected, reflecting the country’s commitment to religious tolerance.
Turning to the situation in Nigeria, Netanyahu condemned what he described as militant attacks and displacement affecting Christian communities. He stressed that persecution, whether of Christians or followers of any other religion, must not be allowed to continue.
“The persecution of Christians or members of any religion cannot and must not be tolerated,” he said. “And Muslim militant displacement and attacks against Christians in Nigeria, that too must end. And it must end now.”
His comments add to mounting international pressure on Nigerian authorities to address insecurity, protect vulnerable communities, and ensure accountability for those responsible for religiously motivated violence.
