A Deputy Superintendent of Police attached to the armoury of the 12 Police Mobile Force in Minna, Niger State, has reportedly died by suicide amid an investigation into alleged illegal arms dealing.

The officer, identified as DSP Isah Abdullahi, was under suspicion for allegedly supplying arms and ammunition to bandits operating in the region. According to the Niger State Police Command, the incident occurred while an official audit was underway to account for missing weapons.

In a statement issued by the command’s spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, DSP Abdullahi was first arrested on December 15, 2025, following allegations that he had unlawfully sold firearms and ammunition. The arrest triggered an internal investigation, including a comprehensive arms audit at the Mobile Police armoury in Minna.

According to reports from the police, the audit was conducted on December 16, 2025, as investigators sought to confirm the number of rifles and ammunition allegedly missing from the armoury. During the process, DSP Abdullahi reportedly gained access to a pistol and shot himself in the head. He was confirmed dead at the scene.

Meanwhile, the police command has taken disciplinary action against officers assigned to oversee the suspect. SP Abiodun stated that those responsible for the audit and investigation have been arrested for negligence, following claims that they failed to prevent the suspect from accessing a firearm.

The police spokesperson added that further investigations are ongoing, with additional suspects being questioned in connection with the alleged arms diversion and the circumstances surrounding the officer’s death.

Authorities say the outcome of the investigation will determine possible charges and further actions as the command seeks to address internal accountability and prevent future breaches within its armoury operations.
