The Lagos State Police Command has arrested popular TikTok content creator Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, following a viral video that showed him driving at high speed while livestreaming, an act authorities say led to a serious road accident and put lives at risk.
According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025. Officers described the behaviour captured in the video as dangerous and potentially suicidal, noting that it exposed both the influencer and other road users to grave danger.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer for the command, SP Abimbola Adebisi, confirmed that Peller was taken into custody after the footage circulated widely across social media platforms.
Police say livestream distracted driver caused crash
According to the statement, Peller was seen operating a vehicle at excessive speed while engaging with viewers during a live broadcast. The police said the distraction contributed to a motor accident that could have resulted in loss of life.
“The suspect’s conduct showed a deliberate disregard for his own safety and that of other innocent road users,” the statement said. Police added that such behaviour amounts to a serious traffic offence under existing laws.
The case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for a full inquiry. According to the command, investigators are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the crash, including the livestream footage and witness accounts.
SP Adebisi said the findings of the investigation would be made public and that the suspect would be charged before a court of competent jurisdiction once investigations are concluded.
Commissioner warns influencers against dangerous content
Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, CP Olohundare Jimoh, issued a strong warning to social media influencers and content creators, urging them to act responsibly online.
According to the police, CP Jimoh cautioned against using digital platforms to promote reckless, dangerous or unlawful behaviour, stressing that online popularity does not place anyone above the law.
“Such actions will not be tolerated, and offenders will face the full weight of the law,” the commissioner said, according to the statement.
The police also urged motorists across the state to comply strictly with traffic regulations, adding that the command remains committed to protecting lives and maintaining public safety on Lagos roads.
The arrest comes amid growing concern by road safety advocates over risky behaviour by some content creators who engage in dangerous stunts for online views. Experts have repeatedly warned that distracted driving, including the use of phones while behind the wheel, remains a leading cause of road accidents in Nigeria.
