South Africa booked their place in the last 16 of AFCON 2025 following a dramatic 3-2 victory over Zimbabwe in a high-stakes Southern Africa derby, while Mali’s goalless draw with Comoros was enough to secure second place in Group A.
South Africa Edge Zimbabwe in Dramatic Finish
The match between South Africa and Zimbabwe lived up to its billing, with both sides exchanging early leads. Tshepang Moremi and Lyle Foster put Bafana Bafana ahead twice, only for Zimbabwe to respond through Tawanda Maswanhise and an own goal from Aubrey Modiba.
The defining moment came late in the second half when Marvelous Nakamba, the Luton Town midfielder, handled the ball inside the penalty area while attempting to block a shot. VAR confirmed the infringement, and Nakamba received a yellow card. Oswin Appollis stepped up to convert the penalty, securing a thrilling 3-2 win and ensuring South Africa advanced to the knockout stage.
Meanwhile, Egypt, already assured of top spot in Group B, played out a goalless draw with Angola, finishing the group stage undefeated.
Mali Draw with Comoros to Progress
In Group A, Mali could not break down a resolute Comoros side in a 0-0 stalemate. The Eagles finished second in the group after three consecutive draws. Their campaign was further complicated when Amadou Haidara was sent off in the 89th minute for a dangerous tackle, but the point was enough to guarantee progression to the next round.
Morocco Dominates Group A
Morocco ended their group stage with a commanding 3-0 victory over Zambia. Ayoub El Kaabi was the star, scoring twice, including a stunning second bicycle kick of the tournament. Brahim Diaz contributed with goals on either side of El Kaabi’s strikes. Both players now share the top spot on the AFCON 2025 goalscorers chart alongside Algeria’s Riyad Mahrez, each with three goals.
Group Stage Summary
Morocco 3-0 Zambia
Zimbabwe 2-3 South Africa
Angola 0-0 Egypt
With the group phase complete, attention now shifts to the knockout rounds, where both South Africa and Mali will hope to build on their steady group performances. Experts note that South Africa’s resilience in tight matches could make them dangerous opponents in the next stage, while Morocco’s clinical finishing has set them up as one of the tournament favorites.
