2027: I Am Not Joining ADC, I Have Always Been Part of the Coalition, Says Peter Obi
Former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has dismissed claims that he plans to formally defect to the African Democratic Congress, ADC, ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during an X Space discussion on Sunday night, Obi said there was no need for him to join the ADC because, according to him, he has been part of the coalition linked to the party from the very beginning.
According to Obi, recent reports suggesting he was preparing to move into the ADC misunderstood his long standing involvement. He explained that his role within the coalition predates the current political conversations surrounding 2027.
“I am not joining ADC. I can’t re-join what I am already a part of,” Obi said during the live session.
He added that he had been involved since the coalition was formed and stressed that there was no arrangement for any political figure to step aside on his behalf.
“I’ve been part of the coalition from day one,” he said. “Nobody is stepping down for me in ADC. We have all agreed to work together.”
Respect for Atiku Abubakar
Obi also addressed speculation about his relationship with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, making it clear that mutual respect remains intact.
According to him, collaboration within the coalition is built on shared goals rather than rivalry or personal ambition. He described Atiku as a leader he continues to respect, despite differences in political platforms and past contests.
“Atiku remains my respected leader,” Obi said.
Political observers note that Obi’s comments come amid increasing political maneuvering as discussions around alliances and coalitions for the 2027 presidential election gather momentum. Parties and influential figures have been holding consultations aimed at forming broad based fronts capable of challenging the ruling party.
Meanwhile, analysts say Obi’s clarification may help calm speculation about imminent defections and realignments, while reinforcing his message of cooperation across party lines rather than outright party switching.
As the race toward 2027 gradually takes shape, Obi’s stance signals a preference for coalition politics and unity, even as he maintains his political independence and existing affiliations.
