A human rights lawyer, Rockson Igelige, has called for an immediate and thorough investigation into the alleged assault and public humiliation of Nigerian actor and cultural advocate, Dr Don Pedro Obaseki.

The call followed the circulation of a video on social media showing Obaseki being attacked at Uwa Primary School in Benin City, Edo State. According to reports, Obaseki had gone to the school to play football when a group of individuals allegedly accosted him and subjected him to degrading treatment.

Condemnation of Alleged Mob Action

In a strongly worded statement issued on Monday in Abuja and made available to journalists, Igelige condemned what he described as unlawful and degrading conduct against Obaseki. He alleged that the actor was forcefully taken by the group and later brought to the Palace of the Oba of Benin under claims linked to a cultural dispute.

According to Igelige, the videos of the incident depict acts that constitute a violation of Obaseki’s fundamental human rights as guaranteed by the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria.

He stressed that cultural disagreements, political differences, or allegations of wrongdoing cannot justify mob action or public humiliation.

“The acts captured in the videos are barbaric, criminal, and totally unacceptable under the rule of law,” Igelige said.

Benin Culture Not Defined by Violence

The lawyer further argued that the conduct seen in the footage runs contrary to the values traditionally associated with the Benin people, who are known for order, dignity, and respect for lawful authority.

According to him, even if those involved claimed to be acting on behalf of a traditional institution, their actions do not reflect authentic Benin culture.

“Barbarism, hooliganism, and mob violence are alien to genuine Benin tradition and must not be falsely attributed to it,” he added.

Obaseki’s Contributions Highlighted

Igelige described Obaseki as an accomplished son of Benin with a long record of contributions to the creative industry, cultural advocacy, and public discourse. He noted that the actor and academic has consistently promoted Benin history and values and has never posed a threat to public peace or traditional authority.

He also identified Obaseki as his former lecturer in Theatre Arts at the University of Benin and expressed personal solidarity with him.

Call for Accountability

The lawyer urged the Edo State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, and other relevant security and investigative agencies to launch a transparent investigation into the incident.

According to him, all those responsible must be held accountable, regardless of their status or affiliations.

“Justice must not only be done, it must be seen to be done, especially given the widespread circulation of these videos,” Igelige said.

He concluded by calling on authorities to ensure that Obaseki is treated with dignity and provided appropriate legal redress in line with the law.
