A Christmas homecoming ended in shock and mourning in Oben Village, Edo State, after a young man identified as Didi was reportedly murdered shortly after returning from abroad to spend the festive season with his family.
According to reports from the community, Didi had arrived in Oben to reunite with loved ones for Christmas when the fatal incident occurred. Residents said the young man was allegedly lured into a nearby bush by a longtime childhood friend, where he was killed under circumstances that have left the village reeling.
Suspect Arrested After Alleged Escape
The suspect was identified as Amadin William, popularly known as “Old Soldier.” According to local sources, he allegedly fled Oben Village immediately after the incident, prompting concern among residents and family members of the deceased.
However, security operatives later tracked him to Benin City, where he was reportedly hiding. He was subsequently arrested and taken into custody. As of the time of reporting, authorities had not released detailed information on the motive behind the killing.
Community in Mourning
The incident has sparked grief and anger in Oben Village. Many residents expressed disbelief that a meeting between childhood friends, especially during the Christmas period, could end in such a violent manner. Some community leaders described the killing as a painful reminder of rising insecurity and the need for vigilance, even among familiar faces.
According to residents, Didi was well known in the area and his return had been welcomed with excitement before the tragedy unfolded.
Investigation Ongoing
Security authorities are expected to continue their investigation as the suspect remains in custody. Officials have assured the community that due process will be followed and that anyone found culpable will be prosecuted in line with the law.
