A 19-year-old matric pupil from Tiego Tawana Secondary School in Dithakang village, near Mafikeng in South Africa’s North West province, has died after he was allegedly taken by force to an initiation school, sparking outrage within the local community.
The deceased, identified as Onalenna Booi, was reported missing by his family shortly after completing his final examinations in late November. According to relatives, his disappearance was reported to the police, and his body was later discovered under circumstances that are now the subject of an official investigation.
School Principal Reacts
The principal of Tiego Tawana Secondary School, Pogiso Tshipo, confirmed the death and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the student.
“I am devastated by the sad news. I was expecting a bachelor’s matric pass from the pupil,” Tshipo said.
He described Booi as a hardworking and determined learner who showed remarkable improvement during his final year. According to the principal, the teenager’s attitude and focus changed significantly when he entered Grade 12.
“I spoke to him in September and he promised to do well in his examinations. He was naughty, but when he started Grade 12, his behaviour changed drastically,” Tshipo said. “You could see this was a pupil who was hungry and determined to perform well.”
Calls for Accountability
Meanwhile, the exact circumstances surrounding Booi’s death remain unclear. According to reports, his family believes he was forcefully taken to an initiation school, a practice that has previously drawn concern from South African authorities due to safety risks and illegal operations.
Community members and family representatives have called on law enforcement agencies to thoroughly investigate the matter and ensure that anyone responsible is held accountable.
Investigation Continues
Police have not yet released detailed findings on the cause of death. However, investigations are ongoing, and authorities are expected to provide updates as more information becomes available.
The tragedy has renewed calls for stricter monitoring of initiation practices, especially during the initiation season, as communities mourn the loss of a young life with a promising future.
